James Sutherland, Ph.D. - Associate Vice President - Public Policy & Advocacy
James Sutherland is a public policy researcher and government affairs professional with over 10 years of experience working in the non-profit and government sectors. As Associate Vice President, Public Policy & Advocacy, James leads the Aquarium’s federal, state, and local advocacy and government relations efforts.
Prior to joining the Aquarium, James was the Director of Policy and Research for the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce (GBCC), the Research Director for then-Boston City Councilor (now Congresswoman) Ayanna Pressley, and a lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Northeastern University.  

James is a graduate of Emmanuel College with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and earned his Masters and Doctorate in Political Science from Northeastern University. A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, James now lives in Dorchester and is an avid skier, tennis player, and natural wine enthusiast.
