An eminent champion of Emmanuel College, Dr. Elaine El-Khawas, passed away November 18, 2022.
A member of the College’s Board of Trustees for the last 36 years—she was among the longest-serving members—Elaine showed an unwavering optimism, brilliance, and warmth, and helped guide Emmanuel successfully through a period of historic change and growth.
Elaine had a long and distinguished career in education research and policy. In addition to holding faculty positions at the George Washington University and UCLA, she advised institutions such as the World Bank, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. During her 14 years as Vice President for Policy Analysis and Research at the American Council on Education, educators across the country waited in anticipation for her expert assessments of industry trends and of federal policy and legislation.
Elaine’s generous spirit was evident not only in her Board service, but also in her philanthropic support of the College. In 2018, she and her spouse, Mohamed, established the Horizon Fund to support student-faculty research and scholarship in the humanities and social sciences. For decades to come, this endowed fund will advance Emmanuel as a college in which undergraduates—particularly first-generation students—benefit from valuable graduate-school-level research experiences.
We invite you to make a gift in memory of Elaine El-Khawas using the form below. All gifts will support the Horizon Fund, and word of your generous gift will be shared with Dr. Mohamed El-Khawas.
Thank you.
