Alumni Panel: Job Hunting in an Economic Downturn

The COVID-19 crisis has sent the economy into recession and impacted numerous careers. It's important to know that while searching for a job during a recession isn't easy, it's not impossible. Meet successful 2008 and 2009 Emmanuel graduates from different industries who also navigated a difficult job market upon their graduation. Hear their stories and how the difficult economy actually helped their career development. There will be time during this panel discussion to network with other alumni and ask our experts for tips and tricks to their success.

Amy Ericson ’09
Amy is a commercial real estate and finance professional residing in New York City. She is the Vice President of Rescom Environmental Corporation, which provides nationwide environmental consulting for developers seeking construction financing. She also consults for startups and family offices, utilizing her strategic business development skills to help companies grow. Amy graduated from Emmanuel College in 2009, magna cum laude with distinction in the field of Political Science. She volunteers for In God's Love We Deliver and the Henry Street Settlement Good Companion Senior Center, which are both located in lower Manhattan.

 

Isis Ortiz ’09
Isis Ortiz is a financial services and underwriting professional with over 10 years of credit risk management, corporate finance and commercial banking experience. She is currently a Vice President, Portfolio Manager at Citizens Bank. In her role she actively manages a portfolio of middle market corporate clients with total credit exposure in excess of $500 million. She has held previous positions at Santander Bank, John Hancock Financial Services and ACCION International. Her bi-cultural background and focus on community affairs and development has led her to a number of volunteer opportunities and leadership roles. Notably, Isis is the Chief Operations Officer for the Boston chapter of the Association of Latino Professionals for America (“ALPFA”). She also sits on the Board of Trustees for Phoenix Charter Academy Network. Isis holds a B.A. in Mathematics and a B.A. in Business Management from Emmanuel College, a Master of Science in Finance from New England College of Business, and a Masters of Business Administration from Bentley University. She’s a recipient of the 2014 McCallum Leadership Scholar Award and a 2018 Latinos for Education Board Fellow. In her free time Isis enjoys spending quality time with her nieces and nephews. She was born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico and currently resides with her partner in Lawrence, MA.

 

Sam Woodson ‘08
Sam currently serves as the Director of Marketing at Emerson College where he leads their marketing and branding efforts. In his seven years at Emerson, he has held multiple marketing roles and helped lead the institution through a comprehensive rebranding effort. During his time at the College, Emerson has repositioned itself in the higher education landscape and seen tremendous enrollment growth. Prior to joining Emerson, Sam spent three years working in Emmanuel’s admission office, counseling students through the admission process and working on marketing initiatives. Sam graduated from Emmanuel in 2008 with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, and again in 2013 with a Master of Science in Management. Outside of work he enjoys spending time with his wife and son, working on his house, hiking and cooking.
