Secret Codes of the Quilts from the Underground Railroad

Presented by Barbara Graceffa ’82, G’96

All are invited to a presentation on the use of quilts as communication in the Underground Railroad network. Although the validity of the oral history is debated, Barbara recounts how the hidden meanings of quilt blocks informed enslaved African Americans when to start their journey to freedom, how to navigate their path, where to find safe houses, and other survival tips.
