Journey to Full Immersion: One Tribe’s Efforts to Strengthen and Maintain Their Native Language

Emmanuel College Alumni Relations is proud to present the Emmanuel Together – Alumni Spotlight Series. This 9-part series will feature a new topic and alum profile each month September 2021-May 2022.

In honor of American Indian Heritage Month, we are pleased to present Lanabeth Toya Garcia '99 discussing Journey to Full Immersion: Our Tribe's Efforts to Strengthen and Maintain Their Native Language.

Preregistration is required and a zoom link will be sent 11/9. This event is complimentary with a suggested donation of $15 to the Emmanuel College Coronavirus (COVID-19) Emergency Response Fund. 


About Lanabeth Toya Garcia '99:

Lana Garcia is a tribal member of the Pueblo of Jemez located in Jemez Pueblo, NM. She is also an Emmanuel graduate Class of 1999. Lana is a speaker of the Jemez Language and works hard to ensure that the young children of Jemez Pueblo learn and know their Jemez Language & Culture. As a strong advocate for ALL American Indian & Alaskan Native children and families, Lana has served on national and state boards and advisory councils promoting for the importance of language and culture within our tribal head start programs throughout the nation. She joined the Head Start Family in 2007 and now oversees the Head Start and Child Care Programs. Walatowa Head Start is now in its eighth year of full immersion implementation with the childcare program starting full language immersion in Fall 2021. The Obama Administration recognized the Walatowa Head Start for their work in language maintenance with a 2016 Educator of the Year Award. Lana lives in her community with her husband Andrew Garcia and three children (Ava, age 19; Marissa, age 16 and Koda, age 3).
