Margaret Ann ”Peggy “ Hoban grew up in New Hyde Park, N.Y., and graduated from Emmanuel College in 1972 with a degree in education and psychology. She earned her masters and doctoral degrees from Boston College in 1974 and 1999 respectively. Peggy began teaching in the Boston Public Schools (BPS) one year after graduating from college and over the next 34 years was devoted to the schoolchildren of Boston, working as an advisor, guidance counselor, school psychologist and administrator. She served children of all ages from those in the early learning program to middle and high school students. Throughout her career, she focused much of her attention on students with special needs.
Peggy died unexpectedly of a brain aneurysm at the age of 56. At that time, she was serving as the Assistant Director of Psychological Services, responsible for supervising more than 50 school psychologists throughout the BPS.
The scholarship fund was established in 2008 to honor Peggy’s career as an educator and to provide financial assistance to deserving students from Boston schools hoping to experience the benefits of an Emmanuel education. The scholarship fund is permanently endowed and has been the source of financial assistance to students from the BPS each year since 2009.
